What is the Opportunity Shop?
A better name could not exist for this resale boutique housed in the lower level of the Church of the Atonement since autumn of 1956.
The tradition continues as the Opportunity Shop at The Church of the Atonement reopened this past fall. Racks have been stocked with new and gently used clothing for the entire family. Shoppers can find brand name items of clothing including casual, formal, sporty and vintage. There is an abundance of boys and girls clothing; women’s formal wear, suits, plus size, maternity, shoes and accessories; and men’s shirts, sweaters, ties and jackets.
Clean, gently used clothing is donated or taken on consignment. What doesn’t meet the staffs’ strict criteria is donated to shelters. The current all-volunteer staff has been managing the shop for decades, and their experienced eyes are keen to select only the best merchandise.
The shop also has a large selection of gently used clothing items including infant, toddler, youth, men, women, maternity and plus-size. While you’re at the shop, ask to visit our boutique section which boasts fur coats and high-end items.
The shop has a wide range of clothing items including infant, toddler, youth, maternity and plus-size. Its biggest boast is a large selection of clothing for ladies and men from casual and sporty to formal and vintage. There are gently used clothes for the entire family including plenty of popular brand names to choose from-all for a small percentage of the retail price. Some clothing items still have their original price tags attached!
“During the summer break, we made many changes to the shop for easier viewing and shopping pleasure,” manager Maryann Silver said. “So I’m inviting our loyal customers who have been shopping since we opened in 1950 to come see our fresh look.”
In addition to its reopening sale, the Opportunity Shop is planning several other sales during the year, including an end-of-year clearance in June.
The shop is open September through June on Thursdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Consignment items are accepted on Thursdays until 2:00pm and donations are accepted during all shop hours. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
The non-profit shop is located in the lower level of The Church of the Atonement (Episcopal) at the corner of Highwood Avenue at Engle Street in Tenafly All proceeds from the shop support ministry and outreach programs at the church and in the local community.
