Music and the Arts

“Music at Atonement” includes wonderful music that enlivens our Sunday 10 am service and 7 pm Taizé service, our Advent Lessons & Carols, Caroling, Christmas pageant, Lenten Meditations, Arts & Music Festival, chamber music recitals, Youth Ensemble, and other events. We give thanks for our dedicated Choir composed of four professional section leaders and volunteers from our congregation, under the direction of our gifted Music Director, Dr. Brian Schober.

At Atonement, we celebrate the God-given creativity of EVERY person, and actively seek to incorporate beauty and creativity into all of our worship and programs.

We have a long history of association with the arts.  For many years the Lamb family were active members here.  Many of our windows are Lamb Studio windows, now registered in the Library of Congress.  Also hanging in the church is the painting, “An Advent Angel” by Ella Condie Lamb, exhibited at the first "World's Fair" in Chicago.  It won the Dodge Prize for best painting by a woman artist.  It is currently being restored for our 150th Anniversary as a parish.  The restored painting and frame will be rehung in late August, and a special celebration to celebrate the "Angel's" return will be held on Saturday, September 21.  The event will feature many of our talented members!

The window over the altar is a Maitland stained glass depiction of the early Church martyrs, St. Sophia (Wisdom) and her children, Faith, Hope and Love.  It is also a symbolic depiction of maternal & divine love.  The Latin inscription above is taken from I Corinthians 13.
